October 8 - Sacramento State Concrete Research

Hilton Garden Inn Sacramento Airport Natomas in Sacramento

The Chapter's October 8th dinner and program will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Sacramento Airport Natomas in Sacramento, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Program:  Sacramento State Concrete Research:  Overview and Selected Projects

Guest Speakers:

Jose Garcia, PhD, Associate Professor
Department of Civil Engineering
California State University, Sacramento
Arturo Perez-Hunt, Civil Engineer
Materials Engineering & Testing Services
California Dept. of Transportation (Caltrans)

The presentation will include an overview of the Sacramento State research facilities and capabilities; discussion of the motivation behind research on low-carbon cementitious systems; and finally, a presentation of the methodology, preliminary results, and conclusions from the project titled “Evaluation of Elevated Temperature Cured Low-Clinker Concrete Produced with PLC, Supplementary Cementitious Materials, and Water-Reducing Admixtures.”

In this study, the cement clinker content in the mixtures ranges from 40% to 50% of the total cementitious materials, using various combinations of limestone powder, Class F fly ash, Grade 120 slag, Class N natural pozzolan, and metakaolin. Two curing regimes were explored to address the reduced early-age strength that is expected in mixes with lower cement content. The results indicate that these mixes provide substantial environmental benefits while exhibiting adequate early-age strength and high bulk electrical resistivity values, highlighting their potential for various applications.

California Senate Bill 596 mandates significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the cement industry. Due to the significant reduction in cement content, the mixes evaluated in this study could be utilized to comply with the legislation requirements. However, in order for these mixes to be a viable solution that is implemented in the field, the mixes must exhibit similar performance to traditional concrete in terms of constructability (fresh properties, early-age strength) and long-term durability.

The presentation will provide an overview of mixes that Chapter members will likely encounter in the field within the next few years and also give Chapter members an opportunity to give the research team feedback to guide future research.
