SJSU Student Night - Chapter Meeting Wrap-Up

Networking, Good Food, Great Presentations, and Fun on the Midway!

The Chapter held its annual Student Night for San Jose State University engineering students on April 8th in Milpitas.  Dave & Buster's welcomed attendees for an evening filled with networking, multiple presentations highlighting the students' recent effort in the FRP bowling ball competition held in Toronto, insulated cocrete forms as a possible solution for wildfires by Vice President Michael Smith, and a the presentation of the Chapter's third installment of $25,000 to the SJSU ACI Student endowment.

The Social Hour kicked off the evening to encourage students and industry members to introduce themselves.  Dinner included slow-smoked pork ribs, barbequed chicken, smoked jalapeno cheddar sausage, romaine-berry-pecan salad, baked beans with bacon, baked mac and cheese, potato saled, and cornbread.

Vice President Michael Smith welcomed the SJSU students, and introduced the team of students participating in ACI's FRP bowling ball competition.

One of the students hand-painted the two bowling ball entries with the Toronto skyline!  Unfortunately, one of the balls was crushed during the competition's physical testing portion.  The team received a disappointing placement in the competition - not for lack of effort, but for their bowling ability.  We wish them better in their next effort!

Vice President Michael Smith presented the evening's main program focusing on insulated concrete form (ICF) construction.  Topics included the composition of ICF, the aesthetics of ICF homes, fire-resistance, the benefits of fire containment, its potential effect on insurance costs, achieving net neutrality, speed of construction, and reduced labor force requirements.

On behalf of the Chapter, Vice President Smith presented Dr. Al-Manaseer with a “big check” representing the Chapter’s $25,000 donation for this year to the SJSU ACI Student endowment.  This was the third installment of the Chapter’s commitment to fund the endowment with a total of $100,000.

The Chapter would like to acknowledge Chapter Student Activities Co-Chair Dr. Akthem Al-Manaseer for his assistance in coordinating this annual event and thank the guest speakers and everyone who was in attendance.  Overall, the evening was a huge success, and we hope the players enjoyed wrapping up their evening on the Midway!
