March 24 - SJSU Student Night

Dave & Buster's in Milpitas

This annual event provides the opportunity for SJSU's engineering students to network with potential employers and make the most of first impressions.  If you are an employer, take this evening to identify the motivated graduates who have chosen to be part of our industry.  There will be ample time for interaction!

SJSU's ACI Student Chapter will be providing an update on their activites over the past year, which will be followed by the evening's educational program.

Program:

Engineering Presentations That Command Respect:  How to Deliver Effective Technical Talks

This presentation discusses the principles of delivering an effective technical presentation in engineering. The talk covers how to organize a presentation around a clear story, tailor content to the audience, simplify slides (including graphics, equations, and tables), and avoid common mistakes such as excess detail or unreadable visuals. It also addresses rehearsal strategies, time management, and professional delivery on presentation day. Practical examples are shown to demonstrate how technical content can be made clearer and more impactful without sacrificing rigor.

Technical knowledge alone is not enough for engineers. Whether presenting research, design calculations, or committee work, the ability to communicate clearly determines how ideas are received and adopted. For students, strong presentation skills improve thesis defenses, internships, interviews, and early-career performance. For the ACI community, effective communication ensures that research, design practices, and code developments are conveyed accurately and persuasively. This session emphasizes clarity, discipline, and professionalism in technical communication, which are essential to both academic and industry success.

Guest Speaker:

Structural Engineer II, AECOM

Ali is a structural engineer specializing in reinforced concrete behavior and bridge design with over eight years of combined research and industry experience. His doctoral research included large-scale testing of beam-column joints and contributed to the development of reinforcement provisions in ACI 318-25 Concrete Design Code. At AECOM, he works on complex bridge projects involving advanced analysis, modeling, design, and detailing of superstructure, substructure, and retaining walls. He serves on Joint ACI-ASCE Committees 343 (Concrete Bridge Design) and 408 (Bond and Development of Steel Reinforcement).
