Carl R. Sundquist

In Remembrance....

The Northern California and Western Nevada Chapter is sad to announce the passing of Chapter Past President (1983) Carl R. Sundquist on Saturday, July 3, 2021.

Carl passed away peacefully at his home in Benicia with his wife and daughters by his side. He was born and raised in Westwood, California, near Lake Almanor, the son of Raymond and Violet Sundquist. He has called Benicia his home for the past 42 years after moving here from Sacramento.

Carl attended California State University, San Jose and graduated from California State University, Sacramento. He received a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the same University in 1979. Carl enjoyed a long career as a Professional Civil Engineer in the concrete, asphalt and gravel products industry. He worked for the California Highway Department (CalTrans) for 25 years in the research lab. He established his own engineering consulting business, providing concrete mix designs, expert witness testimony and even until very recently, was still visiting concrete plants to certify their operations - checking the cement trucks and climbing the stairs to the mixing plant. Carl was highly active in the Civil Engineering community. He was a past President of the American Concrete Institute and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers receiving their award for California’s Outstanding Young Engineer in Community Activity in 1972. Carl taught concrete related courses at Chabot College and California State University, Sacramento.

His military service was as an enlisted man with the United States Army from 1957-1960, stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Guided Missiles. Carl was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Westwood and was a former deacon with Fremont Presbyterian Church in Sacramento.

Carl loved the outdoors. He was an avid duck hunter, a passion that started at an early age. He also enjoyed snow skiing with his family, fishing and rooting for the Oakland A’s and San Francisco 49ers. He took up golf later in life and was a member of SIRS, Sons In Retirement and played Geezer Golf on Wednesdays.

He is survived by the love of his life, Phyllis, his wife of 64 years; daughters Laura (David) Brom and Kara (Steve) Raymer; his grandchildren Christopher and Jenna Raymer and Alycia and Aidan Brom; sisters Irene Jaquette and Elsie Mancebo. He was preceded in death by his sister Ramona Cox.

Carl was a loving and much-loved husband, father and grandfather as well as a great friend to many. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Memorial services with Military Honors will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, July 15th at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, 901 W. Second Street in Benicia. Burial will be private at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. Please visit the online tribute at
