CSU Chico Student Night - Chapter Meeting Wrap-Up

Panel Discussion: Transitioning from Student to Professional

The Chapter held its annual Student Night for California State University, Chico CIM Program students on February 8th in Chico.  Madison Bear Garden welcomed thirty-seven people (19 industry members and 18 students) for an evening filled with networking, a panel discussion targeted to assist students in managing their career paths, and some on-point queries from engaged undergraduates.

The Social Hour kicked off the evening to encourage students and employers to introduce themselves.  Dinner included the Madison Bear Garden's Bear Burger Bar - hamburges with all the appropriate condiments, potato salad, and a selection of chips

Vice President and Programs Chair Ash Wear welcomed the CSUC ACI Student Chapter, who presented a slideshow showcasing their efforts throughout the last year.

The Panel Discussion was the highlight of this evening's program.  Ash, also a CSUC CIM Program gratuate, acted as moderator.. The panel members, all CSU Chico alumni, included Wiatt Chase with The Conco Companies (back row, left), Frank Corzine with Central Concrete Suppply (front, left), Even Felver with White Cap (back, right), Student Activities Co-Chair Paige Silva with Master Builders Solutions (front, center), Past President Clay Slocum with California Nevada Cement Association (back, center), and Nick Steinberg with Mathews Ready Mix (front, right).  Topics ranged from how perople got involved in their current careers; learning to trust in your own knowledge - gained by both education and life lessons; the benefits of using job interviews to gain exposure;  the rewards of actively networking now and throughout your career, the necessity of admitting you don't know something and allowing your embarrassment to become a learning opportunity; and the critical importance of owning up to your mistakes - immediately.

The Chapter would like to give special thanks to the panel members who volunteered to share their experiences with the students in attendance.  Based on the many small groups of industry members and students that formed at the conclusion of the program, all deep in discussion, we would count the evening as a big success!
