Chico Student Night Panel Highlights Transition from School to Workplace

Industry professionals encouraged students to stay curious, seek mentors, and pay attention to work-life balance.

During the Chapter's Chico Student Night event on October 13, 2026,, a panel of CIM program graduates and industry professionals discussed what students can expect as they move from college into the workforce. The conversation focused on the differences between classroom learning and professional practice, the importance of mentorship, and strategies for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

The panel was moderated by Chapter Vice President Mark Hill (on left) and included Maria Navarro with Master Builders, Isaac Munoz with Euclid Chemical and Aaron Rodriguez with Tiechert.

Panelists said that entering the workplace can be very different from working in a college laboratory. While school provides an important foundation, professional experience brings new expectations, responsibilities, and challenges. The panel emphasized that students should view their education as a starting point and remain open to learning as they gain experience.

Mentorship emerged as another central theme. Panelists encouraged students to take advantage of experienced professionals who are willing to teach and share their knowledge. One participant noted that even people with decades in the industry continue to learn, reminding students not to feel discouraged if they do not know everything immediately. Asking questions and building relationships with knowledgeable colleagues were presented as valuable steps toward professional growth.

The discussion also addressed work-life balance. Panelists described how technology and lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic have made it possible to complete some work remotely, offering greater flexibility in certain circumstances. At the same time, they acknowledged that the demands of the industry can affect relationships, family life, and social connections.  One panelist suggested that students can use their home life and social circle as indicators of whether work is affecting their overall well-being. If work is contributing to persistent stress or conflict, that may be a sign that changes are needed to create a healthier balance. The panel encouraged students to remain aware of those effects as they build their careers.

The event concluded with a reflection on advice the panelists would give their younger selves. Although the discussion included personal thanks to the people and organizations that supported their careers, the broader message was clear: students should value the people who help them along the way, continue learning, and recognize that professional development is an ongoing process.

The Chapter would like to thank Broadway Heights for a wonderful meal and its excellent service staff.  Additionally, the Chapter would like to extend its appreciation to the panel members and all those in attendance for making this a sucessful and enjoyable evening.
