Program:  ACI 318-25:  Key Changes Practicing Engineers Need to Know

ACI 318-25 introduces numerous revisions affecting the design, detailing, materials, and construction of structural concrete. This presentation will provide a focused overview of selected changes expected to have the greatest practical relevance to structural engineers and other concrete professionals.

For each selected topic, the presentation will briefly explain the background and motivation for the revision, summarize how the new provision differs from ACI 318-19, and discuss its potential effect on engineering design and detailing. Given the breadth of the new code and the available presentation time, the session is intended as a practical review of the most noteworthy changes rather than a comprehensive chapter-by-chapter examination.

ACI 318 is one of the primary standards governing structural concrete design in the United States and is widely used by engineers, contractors, educators, students, and building officials. As ACI 318-25 continues to be incorporated into professional practice, it is important to understand not only what has changed, but also why the provisions were revised and how those revisions may affect design, detailing, review, and construction.

For practicing professionals, this presentation will provide an efficient review of important revisions they may already be encountering, while highlighting changes that may not yet be widely recognized or fully understood. For students and younger engineers, it will demonstrate how research, observed structural behavior, industry experience, and professional consensus are translated into code requirements. The session will also help connect the principles taught in the classroom with the evolving standards used in professional practice.

Ali is a structural engineer specializing in reinforced concrete behavior and bridge design with over eight years of combined research and industry experience. His doctoral research included large-scale testing of beam-column joints and contributed to the development of reinforcement provisions in ACI 318-25 Concrete Design Code. At AECOM, he works on complex bridge projects involving advanced analysis, modeling, design, and detailing of superstructure, substructure, and retaining walls. He serves on Joint ACI-ASCE Committees 343 (Concrete Bridge Design) and 408 (Bond and Development of Steel Reinforcement).
