Chapman discussed high performance structural lightweight concrete as well as alternative applications for expanded shale and clay including internal curing, geotechnical, and masonry.
Transitioning to Industry Professionals
The next two meetings, our 2019 Student Nights, were well received, and we want to continue the topics discussed for at least part of our 2020 Student Nights. The transition from higher education to professional career responsibilities and structure can be challenging for many graduates.

Transition from full-time student to full-time professional presents challenges. Attendees heard the experiences of a panel of CSUC CIM graduates how students can manage their career paths. There was time for interaction with panel members, students, and employers on this very important topic. But all agreed that the discussion could last longer than the meeting time allowed.

Concrete Preservation Institute (CPI)
Our third 2019 event with a focus on qualified people entering our industry. The Concrete Preservation Institute (CPI) is a nationwide non-profit foundation that serves as an official U.S. military active duty Career Skills Program, partner of the National Park Service, and partner of concrete and construction companies who sponsor their programs and hire alumni. Field School participants gain in-depth, hands-on training for all types of industry careers while completing deferred maintenance projects in National Parks. Our Chapter has featured CPI staff presentations over the years, and assists CPI students as they transition to the civilian workplace.

Another remarkable golf day for over 100 players at one of the most enjoyable courses in Northern California. Thank you to the event sponsors, to the Co-Chairs Rowdy Cordero and Robert Hightower, and to our golfers. We are preparing a slideshow that will be available through this website.

NCAWNV Chapter Annual Meeting
We offered a golfing opportunity at Woodbridge before the evening event. New officers and directors were installed, and retiring directors thanked. We presented the Chapter’s Sam Berks Award for outstanding participation to Kelly Idiart for serving the Chapter and ACI for three decades with intelligence, insight, and good humor. Kelly’s associates at Central Concrete attended the event and enjoyed joined in recognizing his contributions. Thank you to everyone involved!

A current CCPIC/UCPRC task force has been asked to deliver Pavement Recommendations for Cities and Counties. Our September 10 discussion covered some of the focus of this task force with details shared regarding current directions and thought processes.
Speakers discussed the Minimum Cement Requirement issue and the push to move away from it, along with Performance vs Prescriptive recommendations. There was also focus on Dry Shrinkage, Durability, Green Building, and SCM’s (Supplementary Cementitious Materials).
In the Q&A portion of the event, attendees related their own experiences with the current specifications and what they considered would be better methodology.

The Chapter's 2019 ACI Construction Awards Program concluded October 8th at Las Positas in Livermore when four winning projects were presented by Project Team Members.

We hosted a Reception and Dinner following ACI 318-19 Seminar at the Hilton that was presented by ACI through the Michigan Headquarters. Chapter volunteers helped with seminar attendee registration.
